DRAN1262 - Introduction to Comparative Law

Learning outcomes :
The course aims to enable students to familiarise themselves with comparative methods that allow to identify the main features of the principal legal systems (Anglo-Saxon law, continental law, Islamic law...).

Around thirty judgments pronounced by foreign courts (France, Great Britain, Germany) relating to liability for omissions issues, privacy law, etc. are analysed during the course. Students are required to participate by analysing the judgments prior to their examination in class.

This knowledge can be very useful for students who wish to continue their academic training in English, as they will be more regularly faced with participatory methods.

Course contents :
a) Importance and usefulness of comparative law in the legal analysis;
b) Analysis of the different comparative methods;
c) Romano-Germanic law, Common Law and Islamic Law
d) Application of comparative methods to extra-contractual liability law.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The syllabus will be accompanied by various jurisprudential rulings. The student is expected to prepare each course by answering questions on rulings pronounced by Anglo-Saxon, German, Belgian, French and American jurisdictions.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination with case.
