SPOL1216 - Seminar in International Relations

Credits : 4

Lecturers :
Mode of delivery :
Face-to-face , second term, 30 hours of exercises.

Language of instruction :
French (opportunity - not an obligation - of giving presentations and doing coursework in English).

Learning outcomes :
This seminar seeks to convey three types of knowledge:

Theoretical and analytical knowledge: the seminar's main goal is to give students an opportunity to use the skills, theories, and concepts acquired during the course ‘Analysing International Relations'. The seminar enables students to benefit from the latter course's content through applying it to the analysis of a broad theme and specific related questions.

Factual knowledge: the seminar provides an opportunity for students to better grasp certain dynamics operating at the very heart of international processes, to understand the functioning of certain players and institutions, and also to learn about a series of real-world cases.

Methodological knowledge: the seminar aims to develop students' ability to carry out documentary research, to understand and approach a theme in a critical way, and to defend a hypothesis. The seminar is a setting in which students are required to express themselves both orally and in writing, in different formats, and offers a solid preparation for a Master's programme, and even for the professional world.

Course contents :
The course covers a wide range of themes including the entire spectrum of international politics (security, economics, the environment, health, development, etc.).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
An active teaching method is deployed, that is, the teaching process includes discussion about the material that is presented, in an alternating sequence, by the lecturer and then by the students. For example, each class includes a press review (What is happening in the world ?), a student presentation, and a discussion followed by the lecturer's commentary on the presentation.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Assessment is continuous. The final mark is based on the presentation of a press review, a thematic presentation, and the submission of a final piece of coursework.

Recommended or required reading :
A list of dictionaries and guides is provided at the beginning of the year.
