Learning outcomes :
This is an introductory course; as such it has two aims:
1/ to familiarise students with the fundamental notions of law, and therefore introduce the students to the so-called sources and principles of law
2/ to prepare the students for the public law course that they will follow during the second term.

Course contents :
The course covers, among other things, the fundamental notions of law (norms, objective law, subjective rights, etc.), the sources of national and international law, the foundations of the judicial function, etc.


Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
This course is a lecture. The beginning of each session is devoted to summarising the main notions studied in the previous session. The syllabus is not exhaustive, but a summary of the course, which includes the main definitions. The students are invited to acquire a Constitutional Code to follow “text in hand” many of the concepts studied in class. They can also bring a printed copy of the concerned legal texts.


Assessment methods and criteria :
The assessment is a written examination. It lasts two hours and includes four questions of definitions, two questions of the “define and compare” type and three open questions from which the student will choose two.
Students can bring their code or printed copy of legal texts related to the topics covered in the course. Minimal annotations can be added to the texts (highlighting, bookmarks, table of contents), excluding any section of the subject matter and any commentaries.
