GERM1346 - English: Literature III: American Drama

Learning outcomes :
The student will master the fundamental concepts of literary analysis in English and be able to apply them to the different texts discussed in class. Initiated to research and scientific writing, students will report their analysis data though a well-founded argumentation and adequate oral and written expression.


Prerequisites and co-requisites / Recommended optional programme components :
End of BAC 2 level skills in English language and literature.

Course contents :
The course is devoted to the literary and contextual analysis of works of American theater of the twentieth century selected amongst the most significant, including Eugene O'Neill (Long Day's Journey into Night), Tennessee Williams (The Glass Menagerie) and Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman). The analysis of the works uses an approached based on the European heritage (Strindberg, Ibsen), that will clarify the circumstances of the emergence of the American theater and the development of its originality.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lessons including lectures followed by individual presentations and discussions prepared by the students about the selected works.

A portfolio of supporting documents (secondary sources, online databases) is available to students on the electronic platform (eSaintLouis) of the course. The approach of the selected works is facilitated by the use of specialised scientific publications (Methuen Drama) that include an introduction, a glossary, and other useful resources. Alongside the studied texts, the course refers to biographical and historical documentaries as well as filmed adaptations (DVDs).
Course sessions promote the active participation in English of students at any time.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation is based on an oral exam, a presentation in class and writing a literary essay, each one worth one-third of the final grade.
