GERM1126 - English: Linguistics I: Practical Exercises

Learning outcomes :
Bring the student to a fluent written and oral command of the English language (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages : B2 level). The student must be able to recognise, utilise and operate autonomously, in a precise and rigorous manner, the syntactic and lexical characteristics of the English language discussed in BAC 1.

Prerequisites and co-requisites / Recommended optional programme components :
A good knowledge of English (end of secondary school level)

Course contents :
1. Grammar and vocabulary:
a) Operating structures acquired in the Linguistics I course and the lexicon covered in class that should be studied in the form of sentences to translate or complete, descriptive and creative compositions, words to define, ... Exercises requiring the proper use of translation dictionaries and explanatory dictionaries will be proposed. Emphasis will also be placed on the "recognition" of words or phonetically transcribed sentences aimed at improving pronunciation.
b) In the context of reading mainly non-literary texts (newspaper articles, advertisements...): analysis of grammatical structures and vocabulary as well as the logical connections of speech.

2. Expression:
a) Oral expression. Informal conversation Exercises such as debates, role plays and other creative exercises; prepared presentations of topics related to the culture of English-speaking countries, oral reports of texts read or listened to; prepared debate management about social phenomena; ...
b) Written expression. Composition exercises: creative writing (narrative-type, description, journalistic...), structured summary of articles in English, expressing an opinion in the form of a letter to the editor ...

In addition to the work carried out in class for which the students should undertake preparatory exercises, students must provide a personal work to upgrade and enrich their lexicon. They will systematically study all the vocabulary covered in the book "Oxford Word Skills - Intermediate, OUP" and complete listening exercises based on the "Log In I (Plantyn)" method. In the latter case, students must be able to transcribe sections of short stories and answer questions in English.
Regular reading (newspapers, magazines, online or not,...) and listening exercises (radio or television news, movies, entertainment programs, ... on English channels) are highly recommended.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Exercice seminar with active participation of students.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Several written tests will be held during the academic year, some of which (more summative) non-compulsory, that allow for a partial exemption for the January and June examination.
The January examination is written and in June includes a written part and an oral part.
For the written part, the student must demonstrate that he/she has mastered the subject matter covered and is able to put it into practice in written exercises similar to those that have been proposed during the year (see contents above).
At the oral examination, the student must prove that he/she is able to express him/herself correctly and fluently on topics discussed during the year and on texts previously prepared at home. He/she will also have twenty minutes (the duration of the oral exam of the previous student) to read a new text and prepare a summary or structured report, as well as personal opinion. He/she must be able to react spontaneously to various questions asked by the teacher following the presentation.
