EU Business Law & WTO Trade Practice Summer School (6th Edition)

 

June 27 - July 15, 2016

 

 

Programme 

 

We offer a multimodal programme. Participants may enrol for the three-week programme or decide to drop out week 1 or week 3.

 

1st week (June 27 - July 1) - Brussels • Introduction to the Legal System of the European Union

 

In this course participants will learn about the governance of the European Union and the common principles that bind together the member states. This introduction to EU law will explain how the main institutions and bodies of the European Union cooperate with each other in the drafting and adoption process related to legally binding acts, with a particular emphasis on the European Court of Justice and the judicial remedies available in the EU legal order. The course also includes a presentation of the various techniques whereby the EU authorities seek to harmonize national legislations and ensure the functioning of the EU’s internal market.

 

2nd week (July 4 - July 8), Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg & Geneva • International Trade Law Practice under WTO

 

Participants will have the opportunity to travel from Brussels through Luxembourg and Strasbourg to Geneva, getting acquainted with the functioning of European and International organisations. Participants will visit the European Court of Justice, the European Parliament, the European Court of Human Rights and the World Trade organisation (WTO). During their journey, they will have the opportunity to meet key figures in the field of EU law and WTO litigation, including judges, practitioners and officials.

 

3rd week (July 11 - July 15), Brussels • Aspects of EU Business Law

 

This course provides an introduction to some selected aspects of EU business law that are representative of the typical practice of an international law firm, such as competition (including antitrust and state aid), trade, intellectual property, data protection and mergers & acquisition. Participants will also gain an overview of banking and tax law related to the day-to-day practice of lawyers based in the European Union.

Admission Criteria

 

This Summer School is open to up to 40 participants: advanced students (who have completed at least the 2nd year of their degree), young graduates and professionals with a background in law, political science, economics, or any other field which bears a connection with EU and international business law.

 

All courses are taught in English. Even though applicants are not required to present an official certificate of language proficiency, they have to be fluent in English in order to follow the courses, actively participate in classroom discussions and interact with other participants.

 

To apply to the programme, please complete in English the Application Form 2016 and send it to the coordination officer preferably by email. You can also send it by mail to the Institute for European Studies, Université Saint-Louis - Bruxelles, Bd du Jardin Botanique, 43, 1000 Brussels (Belgium).

 

Please note that the number of participants is limited. Only applications duly completed will be evaluated.

 

Schedule

 

February 2016: Applications open

May 1, 2016: Deadline for applications. (NEW: For Blue Book trainees of the European Commission, the application deadline will be extended to the 15th of May).  

 

Early enrollment is strongly encouraged as the number of participants is limited. Only applications duly completed will be evaluated. We will process your application within two weeks of the reception of the complete form (see Application Form). Full payment of the registration fee will be due within one week after the notification of acceptance (see our Payment terms and cancellation terms).

 

Certificate and ECTS Credits

 

Each of the three weeks will end with an in-class written exam. Upon succesful completion of the course and following a written examination, participants will be issued a certificate of attendance and an academic transcript (courses attended, marks and grades).

 

Participants who attend the whole programme (3 weeks) will receive 5 ECTS credits that can be transfered to other European universities using the ECTS system. We do, however, recommend that you check with your home institution before applying to our Summer School to be sure that the credits are transferable.

 

The participation certificate is recognised by the Continuing Legal Education programme of the Ordre des Barreaux Francophones et Germanophone de Belgique as follows: week 1 - 18 points, week 2 - 11 points and week 3 -  21 points.

 

Paid internship at Van Bael & Bellis

 

Best Summer School participants - lawyers or last-year Law Master students - will have the opportunity to attend a job interview for a paid internship at Van Bael & Bellis.

 

Van Bael & Bellis offers a limited number of internship positions throughout the year. The law firm aims to give their interns an opportunity to experience work and day-to-day life as a lawyer within our firm.

 

The criteria used in selecting interns are similar to those for permanent members of the firm.

 

Eligibility: best Summer School participants - lawyers or last-year Law Master students.

 

Internship period: from one to six months. Select Summer participants will be asked to write a motivation letter mentioning the period they would like to do their internship and to send a CV (in English).
